Calgary Food Facts

Did you know that among the culinary achievements linked to the city of Calgary some are:

  1. The Caesar cocktail was created by bartender Walter Chell at the Owl’s Nest Lobby Lounge of the Calgary Inn (now the Westin Hotel) in 1969 to commemorate the opening of a new restaurant in the hotel.
  2. The very popular Chinese take out dish Ginger Beef was first created here in 1975 by the chef/owner of  Chinatown’s Silver Inn restaurant.  Thought to be inspired by the northern Chinese dish Geung Ngao Yuk the Calgary version has reached a popularity eclipsing many other well known dishes.
  3. World famous Hy’s seasoning salt was created by the chefs in the kitchen of Hy’s Steakhouse downtown.
